The $5,000 scholarship has been used by student to visit and study in exciting places, including Ghana, Argentina, Ecuador, Tanzania, South Africa, Russia, and Vietnam. http://www.viraheinz.pitt.edu

A Broader View Volunteers has had the pleasure to host two winners of the VIH Scholarship. Chantal Barr traveled with ABV to Ghana and Tanesha Waid traveled to Vietnam.

Tanesha Waid, class of 2013 at Arcadia University, was a 2011 recipiente and used her scholarship to travel and volunteer in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam. Tanesha spent four weeks at an orphanage home to over 60 children. While there Tanesha focused on teaching English, and focused her time on education of the small children.

Upon her return to the USA Tanesha continued her support of the orphanage by hosting a luncheon fundraiser at Arcadia University which was held on December 07th 2011. A Broader View staff was invited to attend and share in this happy event with Tanesha.

Thank you!

Volunteering in the Galapagos Islands

Santa Cruz Island is located in the center of the Galapagos archipelago. It is the hub of most activity in the Galapagos since it is home of the National Park Headquarters and the world-renown Darwin Research Station. This island is a good place to see many animals like the giant tortoises, marine iguanas and the sea lions.

Our social welfare programs will allow you to work with very small children, babies, toddler and also pre-school and higher education while in Santa Cruz.
Volunteers begin and end their journey in Quito. You will spend the first 2 nights in Quito (with meals) receiving your program briefing and orientation. You will be provided roundtrip airline tickets to Santa Cruz and be escorted to the airport in Quito. Flight time is approximately 3 hours.
On arrival in Santa Cruz you will be met by your host family at the airport and they will accompany you to their home. The journey from the airport to the host family include a short ferry ride followed by a 45 minute bus ride into town.

The ABV Galapagos program include the following services:

Airport meet and greet in Quito

2 night accommodation/meals in Quito

Orientation, project briefing in Quito

Airline ticket Quito to Galapagos

Entrance fee ($100) Galapagos National Park

Ingala ID card

Meet and greet in Santa Cruz

Host family accommodation and 3 meals a day in Santa Cruz

Volunteer project placement 35-40 hour per week

Transfer to Santa Cruz airport at end of program

Airline ticket Galapagos to Quito

Airport reception in Quito

Final overnight/meals in Quito

Departure transfer to Quito

Volunteers will not have any out of pocket expenses once in Ecuador for the program. Flights, park fees, and all transportation costs are included in program cost. Budget $200-$300 a month for incidental spending.

Costa Rica – Volunteer Sea Turtles Programs

Volunteering in Costa Rica, despite being a tiny nation, draws over one million visitors each year – and you can see why. The varied topography means you can cruise a cloud forest one day, climb a volcano the next, and finish unconscious in a hot sandy beach.

Costa Rica is a tropical country and experiences only two seasons: wet and dry. The dry season is generally between late December and April, the rainy season lasts the rest of the year.

The highlands are cold: San José and the Central Valley get an ‘eternal spring’ average low of 15 ° C (60 ° F) and highs averaging 26 ° C (79 ° F). Both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts are almost suffocating throughout the year – preparing for a bad hair day.

Temperatures vary little between seasons, the main influence on temperature is altitude. Low-level moisture can be oppressive.

Location

Costa Rica is one of the world’s most popular destinations for eco-tourists because of its biodiversity. It has been stated in various places that Costa Rica may contain as much as 6% of the worlds plant & animal species – this in a country that is only as large as the States of Vermont and New Hampshire (combined) in the U.S.A. Costa Rica is Spanish for rich coast. As such, one can expect to find this place to be the ideal tropical paradise with bewilderingly diverse landscapes, flora, and fauna. From rain forests, to dry tropical and temperate forests, to volcanoes, to Caribbean and Pacific beaches, to high mountains, and marshy lowlands.

About the project

The sea turtle conservation program aims to protect the Kemp’s Ridley, Leatherback and Green Sea Turtles’ nesting populations on various beautiful Costa Rican beaches. This program has been helping to protect the nests from human poachers and, more recently, from the erosion of the beach. The nesting season of turtles runs from May to December (depending on the beach) but it goes all year long, reaching its highest peak in December. (In December 2009, about 1,200,000 arrived to the beach in the nestling week at the Ostional Project). Each season, the Costa Rica turtle conservation program recruits volunteers to help in the research and conservation work, such as night patrolling, working in the hatcheries, collecting eggs, and rescuing turtles. During this time, you will have a chance to work directly with turtles, taking shell and nest-dimension measurements, collecting eggs, and tagging the rear flipper of the turtles.

Important note: Sea Turtles programs are located in remote wildlife reserves with very basic living conditions and a limited variety of food. There is a lack communications: no Internet, weak mobile signals, public phones may not be in order as well.
