Experience a heartfelt journey of Nori Kobayakawa, who volunteered at the local University in Mongolia. From acclimating to the cultural landscape, contributing diligently to the educational program, to exploring the vast steppes and traditional Mongolian practices, Nori’s narrative encapsulates the essence of altruistic exploration and the fostering of cross-cultural connections in the heart of Ulaanbaatar. The tale also warmly touches upon the local support received, the striking openness of the Mongolian populace, and the enriching exchanges that transcended beyond the classroom.

1.-How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country (airport pickup and drop off, orientation, introduction to work, availability, other)?
The ABV coordinator was fantastic. There was no issues. She was very attentive and took very good care of me while I was in Ulaanbaatar.

2- What was the most positive surprise you experienced?

At the program: The enthusiasm and how I was welcomed by the students and faculty

At the accommodation: It was quite comfortable with little inconveniences.

About the country: The openness of the country and the people were quite friendly.

3- What was most difficult/cultural shock to experience?

At the program:

There was no materials for the classes. I had to put together the daily presentation material, the tests and the homework. The first week had some sleepless nights getting the material together so I could teach the 2 separate 3 hours classes at a college level.

At the accommodation:

The only difficulty was some of the variety of the food. But there were no real issues. When I wanted to eat something a little bit different, I could find it.

The country:

I did not find much difficulty. I always go with the flow and adjust as necessary. The biggest challenge was when I participated in a Mongolian wrestling match against the 55 year old monk at the horse branding ceremony.

4- Any tips for future volunteers, give as many details as possible…

Clothing:
The temperature variation can be an issue if you are not prepared. In the morning it could be around 0 degrees C and get up to above 15C in the afternoon.

Donations:

No tips here. I gave a lot of my time preparing materials for the classes over and above the 6 hours of teaching each day.

Weather:

Similar comments are above under clothing.

4- Other things volunteers should know, about what to bring, what to do in country, what to eat, transportation, other:

a. I was able to walk to my program so daily transportation was not an issue. Taxis/local drivers are readily available. It is best to have the location you want to go to written in Mongolian. Anybody can be a taxi driver in Ulaanbaatar. They charge you by the kilometer. Best to know about how much it should be to where you want to go. I was warned some drivers may try to over charge but, I did not have this problem

b. The homestay food was very simple. Milk is a stable of the diet. I had rice in milk, Yak milk and fermented mare milk. They like to eat the meat of the bones used to make the daily soups and porridge with vegetables. There was a Pizza Hut and an Irish Pub Restaurant near by for when I wanted something different to each. I brought a couple of pizzas back and everyone enjoyed it.

c. I was able to arrange 3 tours with Sarah of ABV. One trip was staying in a ger for two nights and helping prepare and participate in the Colt Branding Ceremony. The other 2 tours were to Hustai Nat’l Park to see the wild horses and Terejl Nat’l Park.

5- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):

The teaching experience at at the University was an amazing experience. While teaching 2, 3 hours English classes daily, I was able to learn much about the traditional Tibetan medicine being taught to develop future traditional medicine doctors. I was also able to experience their practices through massages, cupping, realignment, bloodletting and herbal medicines.

I enjoyed the local cuisine, urom – custard cream, salted milk tea, fermented mare milk -airag, Mongolian dumplings – buuz, deep fried meat pie – huushuur, boodog – cooking goat with hot rocks (I was also able to hold one of the hot rocks as part of the ceremony), bantan – meat porridge, lavsha guriltai shul – noodle soup, bin – fried bread and finally aaruul – dried curd (a daily snack).

Mongolia is a very beautiful country with vast open areas with no people in the steppes. I was able to arrange 3 tours with Sarah of ABV. One trip was staying in a ger for two nights and helping prepare and participate in the Colt Branding Ceremony. The other 2 tours were to Hustai Nat’l Park to see the wild horses and Terejl Nat’l Park with the Chinggis Khan’s statute.
I hope to go back to Mongolia to experience their biggest festival, Nadaam, in July.

6- How would you describe your accommodation, meals and security in detail:

The accommodation was comfortable, meals were good and security was never a concern.

7- What was your favorite memory of this trip?

Program: Successfully completing the required curriculum for the students and giving them their grades.

Country: The vastness of the open areas.

Tours: Spending a weekend in the ger.

8.- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling, who helped you?

The communication with ABV was smooth and no issues were encountered. Sarah answered any questions I had.

Website Information: Gave me the necessary information before I left.

9 – Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
Yes

Kristina Ericsson’s volunteer experience in Cusco, Peru, was “a wonderful eye-opening experience,” where she engaged in activities like volunteering at a kindergarten and medical/dental clinic, and taking Spanish lessons. Challenges included cold nights due to no central heating and communication barriers.

Tips for future volunteers include bringing warm clothing and cash. Kristina praised the local coordinator’s support and the friendliness of the host family. Her favorite memories include having lunch with her host family, volunteering at the hospital, and exploring Cusco.

1- How was the local ABV Coordinator/staff and the support provided in-country? Absolutely amazing. Way above expectation. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?
Program: It was so well planned out. Everyone pitched in and helped where needed. There was so much food!

Host Family: Wonderful, caring, clean house, bedroom, bathroom, great food.

Country: I didn’t get sick! How friendly the people were.

3- What was the most challenging thing you experienced?
Program: Some people can be difficult to work with.

Host Family:They gave so much food!

Country: waiting for waiters to take orders and bring food.

4- Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations)

bring vitamins and more vitamins.

don’t bring too much clothing, especially sweaters that take up space. You’re going to buy way more than you ever thought.

make a list of what is needed, and then have volunteer sign up for it.

more vitamins. Ibuprofen and Tylenol went quickly as well.

5- Other things volunteers should know before coming here:

a. Need to be self sufficient. Only bring what you can carry yourself.
b. Try speaking spanish. They all appreciate it. Even if you don’t know much.
c. You’re in someone else’s house and someone else’s country, live by their standards, and don’t make them cater to your needs. They have provided more than necessary.

6- Personal Paragraph about the experience (ABV Program Testimonial):
This was my first medical mission. I had no expectations. I kind of thought we would be sleeping on dirt floors or something. The housing and the families were more than gracious. So caring and wonderful. Clean bedrooms, bathrooms, but don’t expect hot water for showers. A little bit of warm water is a blessing. As for the program helping people, all the volunteers got together and just did what needed to be done. We all helped out where needed, and worked hard to see all the patients that came and lined up that morning. We all tried to work through lunch and continue long after closing, but our host made us stop for lunch and get recharged. Everyone who came to volunteer was so kind and loving to everyone it was just wonderful to see everyone working together to help others.

As far as the most emotional moment for me, I think it was at the small village of 178 people who all came, plus more people, and they had nothing, no running water, and they needed so much. Yet, they all got together to make us a lunch with their chickens, potatoes and salads. They gave to us so much, and were so thankful. Bringing toys for the kids to play with was so rewarding to watch. They were so grateful. The entire week was rewarding, but this stood out to me.

7- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security, friendliness, quality others:

Above expected. Way above expected. Just an FYI, don’t expect hot showers. A lukewarm shower is a blessing. I never felt scared, the place was very safe. Don’t drink the tap water. That was the only rule I lived by. Everyone was friendly. It was really amazing.

8- What was your favorite memory of this trip?:
Program: The entire thing. I loved the trip to machupichu after a long week of hard work. The people we worked with were the BEST.

Host Family: How caring and loving they were to us. They were so accommodating.

Country: The people. They were so friendly and thankful.

Despite language barriers, one gains hands-on experience and valuable skills in medical assistance, while exploring the city’s rich culture, delectable cuisine, and stunning Incan ruins.
1-How was the local ABV Coordinator/staff and the support provided in-country?
Maria Elena was amazing! Before I arrived I had reached out on WhatsApp and she was quick to reply with packing tips, necessities (power adapter), and asking me what sightseeing tours I was interested in. When I arrived in Cusco she showed me all there is to know and was easy to find right outside the airport. It was very easy to navigate the city, so much that I didn’t even need international data everyday. Maria Elena is a perfect mom and wonderful project coordinator! She always had breakfast for me in the morning before I left, would wish me a good day, and make sure I made it to work and back safely. Overall she did a great job of making me feel at home and supported, even from before I arrived in Cusco.

Peru is almost just like your home, in fact even better. You will have clean water, a nice shower, toilet, warm bed, and very yummy food if Maria Elena is your host mom. Do not overpack things like toilet paper/wet wipes/etc. They are all easily available here in nearby stores, the mall, and a quick ask to your host family. Cusco is not rural, everything is very convenient and usually cheap as well.

3-What was the most challenging thing you experienced?
Nothing was specifically “challenging” but I will say you have to be ready to step out of your comfort zone. Be ready to speak Spanish and practice, even if people can tell you are not very good/foreign. Practice makes perfect and it truly shows from the start of your trip to the end. Do not be shy to start conversations with your taxi driver, market vendors. ask questions, or even go out. Cusco is very safe and your host family will always make sure you are as well. They can only however help you if you tell them what you want/need. Sometimes this means asking if they can take you somewhere, go out with you, or even just speaking with them. Be ready to live in Cusco, not the US or your home country. It is important you get to know where you are staying and help it become a home for you, rather than being closed off.

4-Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations)
Make sure you land with Soles and know where to get more. This is really important given that most of the time you are paying 5-12 soles for taxis/etc. and need smaller bills on hand ready to use. Please let your host mother/father know if you have flight delays, even if they may not necessarily impact your final landing time. It is important they know to check your flight, because they won’t do so unless things have changed/may change regarding your arrival or departure. Make sure that you know the process for immigration/check in bags before you leave so you are not scrambling last minute. Packing light is usually smarter. That being said, only you know yourself, so if you want snacks or maybe instant food, take care of yourself.

5- Other things volunteers should know before coming here:
Toilet paper is something you need to carry a bit of on you because public restrooms may not have it. Always ask the price of a taxi before getting in to avoid getting overcharged. It is important to know a few landmarks in the area you are staying to easily navigate. Other than that the program is very fun and Peru Cusco is an exciting city to explore!

6. Personal Paragraph about the experience:

I loved this program and especially doing it in Cusco! When I first landed I was quite hesitant to go to work, considering that I was the only person volunteering there at the time and the language barrier. However after the first day I saw just how passionate the dentists, doctors, and staff are about their jobs. They always tried to include me in their procedures, slowly explaining in Spanish what was going on, asking about my interests, and even teaching me to assist them with extractions/fillings. By my second day I was a pro, able to help the staff in the dental clinic with multiple aspects: grabbing instruments, sterilizing, creating gauze/cotton rolls, curing resin, creating crown pastes, and calling in patients. As a 17 year old, I expected not to be able to do much other than observing but it was quite the opposite. I worked with over 5 doctors, whom I all got to know and assist. Outside of work I loved the city! My cab driver Juan, who my host mother coordinated all the logistics for, would pick me and drop me off everyday. I was hesitant to navigate cabs with my mediocre Spanish but Maria Elena coordinated everything for me. She came with me to work the first day and set up a pickup/dropoff schedule with my driver. Juan was always on time, waited for me, and would talk to me in the car about places to visit, where I was from, etc. He made sure I made it safely home by calling Maria Elena. The city is so beautiful! The markets are extremely nice, and everyone is friendly here. Beware that everything in the Plaza de Armas is meant for tourists and thus is overprices or not Peruvian food. Maria Elena did a wonderful job of telling me where to go for Peruvian food and places I should visit. Do not forget to buy chocolate from Cusco! It is truly one of a kind and Maria Elena took me to multiple chocolate stores and explained everything out to me. I was extremely happy and ended up eating all my chocolate in a day (dangerous!). At first I did not want to sight see much as I was traveling alone but I am so glad I did. Even if you do not visit Machu Picchu like me, Cusco is so rich in culture and history. The Inca ruins are a must and the stories behind them are extremely intriguing. Soak up everything you can while you are here because it truly is a beautiful city with so much to see. Maria Elena was the best host mother out there. I had mentioned once my grandma lives with me and she bought all my family gifts from Cusco. Maria Elena truly listens to you and cares about each of her volunteers, caring for them like her own kids. I cannot wait to come back to Cusco to share all it was with my family and hopefully revisit the hospital I worked at!

7- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security, friendliness, quality others:
María Elena’s home was very comfortable. I was actually surprised about how comfortable my bed was. All the meals provided were delicious, restaurant quality and snacks/drinks were readily available on the table. Maria Elena will always have food out and ready for you. The house is very secure and clean! I personally don’t sleep with my door closed and felt totally fine going downstairs at night or leaving my room door open when I went to bed. I actually almost slipped a couple times at home because of how clean, shiny, and smooth the floors were (don’t run around the house fast). Maria Elena and the other volunteers staying in the house simultaneously were extremely nice, considerate, and warm. When I arrived Maria Elena made sure I knew everything I needed to about her home, Cusco, and what daily routine would look like. She even took me out multiple times with her to the mall and once to dinner with her friends. Similarly the other volunteer, Makenna, whose stay overlapped with mine, went out of her way to take me out in the city within my first few days. She really helped me understand how to use taxis, where the best places to eat are, and just showed me around.

8- What was your favorite memory of this trip?:
One memorable moment of my trip is lunch. Everyday after work I would come home to a very delicious meal that I was able to share with Maria Elena and her family. As someone starting to get the hang of Spanish it was definitely difficult to practice with people and I was often nervous to speak with others in work/outside. Sharing these delicious meals with Maria Elena, her daughter, and son in law helped me get more comfortable with Cusco, Spanish, and was very enjoyable. We would often talk for at least an hour and I would learn a lot about quite literally everything. They were so warm, welcoming, and made me feel like I was part of their family. Not to mention getting a hot, delicious, gourmet Peruvian meal everyday. Maria Elena cooked something different everyday and was extremely accommodating of my diet, preferences, and even bought items she hear me mention I liked. I will definitely miss those meals we ate together, having long conversations, Maria Elena’s cooking, and herself/her family.

9- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling? (who helped you, emails, phone calls, chat online, how fast did you got an answer, did you got all your answers)
The ABV USA support was fantastic to say the least. Being a 17 year old traveling solo internationally for the first time, I had a lot of questions about the program. The 24-7 support chat helped me identify the best programs for me and find the dental program in Cusco. Furthermore, any concerns my family/parents had were very quickly answered over the phone with Sarah from ABV. This really assured my mom that I would be safe and well taken care of. It was really nice to have a real person over the phone talking about the program and its details but also very convenient to have the chat there for any quick questions I could not access online. Responses were always received in the same day, if not immediately and were extremely thorough.

9.1-What do you think about the reservation system online?
The reservation system online was very easy to navigate and complete. The whole process was shorter than I had expected and every fee was explained. I will say to be aware that there is a time limit to complete everything before your profile gets inactivated. This means you should likely complete filling out certain information within a week. If you don’t, there is not any reason to worry as you can just use the 24-7 chatline to request the reactivation of your profile. I had done this twice during the reservation period as logistics were being coordinated.

Sydnee Lynch’s experience as a volunteer in Ecuador’s Quito Child Care Program under ABV was transformative. She appreciated the support from her local ABV coordinator and host mom, who was energetic and kind. Surprised by the country’s diversity in landscapes and people, she learned to adapt to the slow pace of life. She found joy with her host family, playing card games and advises future volunteers to be prepared for varying weather and to be flexible with plans. She felt safe and supported and cherishes the friendships made.

1- How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?
My local ABV coordinator was also my host mom. From the beginning, she was
energetics, kind, and very helpful. She has a many connections as well to help me have
the best experience. She was always very supportive, loving, and helpful to all my
needs and wishes.

2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?
The most surprising thing I experienced in Ecuador is the constant diversity of the
country and it’s people. Having traveled to the coast, the jungle, and stayed in the city
during my time, it’s amazing to see the drastic differences a few hours between places
holds. Such as the changing landscape from beaches, to Amazon jungle, to mountain
ranges. Also the people in personality, disposition, and occupations.

3- What was most difficult to experience?
The thing I originally struggled most with was learning the slow pace of life here. I
struggled to be comfortable with not having a plan for every day and every hour. I had to
learn that almost nothing goes to plan here and you have to be ready for everything. Not
only this, but I learned it’s okay to take a nap some days after a long day of Spanish
lessons and my project. Rather than feeling like I have to take advantage of every
second of every day, I adjusted to the slow and calm lifestyle of living here.

4- Any tips for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations)
Take the weekends to travel as much as you can to see the landscapes! It’s truly
amazing to see the changes and take the opportunity while it is there! Also if traveling to
ecuador pack for chilly weather but if planning to go to the coast very hot weather as
well, essentially be prepared for everything. And learn to go with the flow and lessen
control over your plans and time here! It’s more fun to enjoy the trip as it comes than
feel you have to do everything a certain way or check every item off your list.

5- Other things volunteers should know:

Bring a rain jacket. Rain will come for 20 minutes then be sunny the next 30, but be
prepared to changing weather and rain.

Take initiative and don’t wait for people to tell you what to do. Ask questions for
yourself, don’t wait for others to ask for you.

Be cautious about the water and ice. Always ask if it’s purified or get a bottled water
to be safe so you don’t get sick.

6- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):

Volunteering with ABV has truly been a life changing experience. Not only the
opportunity to experience a new culture for several weeks, but to stay with a host family
and work with the community so closely is an amazing opportunity. I’ve met so many
amazing people and made strong friendships, only giving me more reason to travel the
world. I know I’ve been a changed person upon returning home and realize how blessed
I am and how different people live. I’m beyond excited I got to experience this amazing
journey and learn so much and grow in my love for travel. ABV will definitely be hearing
from me again soon as I plan to pick a new destination to volunteer with again soon.

7- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security (e: host family, on-site, shared)
My host family was absolutely amazing. They were very accommodating to dietary
restrictions or preferences and we had family dinners every night and a prepared
breakfast and lunch. I had my own room for the first two weeks then when another
volunteer came we shared the room. It was spacious and more than enough for the two
of us. I always felt safe as well with a security guard at the front door of the apartment
complex and my own keys to lock the doors as I wished.

8- What was your favorite memory of this trip?

I think my favorite memory is with my host family. I brought a new card game to give
and teach them, and once they were given it we played for several nights after dinner,
all together playing all kinds of card games, talking, and laughing.

9- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling?
ABV was great with keeping in contact with me, always responding, and answering all
my questions. I always felt I had a connection to ask all my questions to who I knew
would respond quickly and thoroughly. I appreciated having all my information in one
place as well and easily accessible.

Experience a heartwarming welcome at our program, where the energy of the children and the welcoming staff make you feel at home from day one. Our community eagerly embraces new members with open arms, questions, and smiles. Join us today.

1 How was the local ABV coordinator and support provided in country?

My local ABV coordinator was also my host mom. From the beginning, she was energetics, kind, and very helpful. She has a many connections as well to help me have the best experience. She was always very supportive, loving, and helpful to all my needs and wishes.

2 What was the most positive surprise you experienced?

At the program: I was happily surprised to see how welcoming and energetic the children were to see me at my project from the beginning. On my first day, they instantly greeted me, hugged me, asked me questions, etc. I never felt like a stranger or an outsider to the children or the staff, who were equally as welcoming.

At the accomodation: At my home and with my host family I was surprised by the constant supply of time spent together with the family. We had family dinners every night and usually had breakfast together as well. Beyond this, we also spent time after dinner playing cards, watching movies, or another activity with the kids which was always a blast. I wasn’t sure how my host family was going to be, so getting to talk with them every night and learn more about them was the best surprise.

The country: After hearing the news and from others that Ecuador can be an unsafe country, I was happily surprised to have always felt safe there. Everyone was always kind to me and willing to help me out. Even when walking alone to my project or touring the city, I never felt unsafe or threatened by my environment.

3 What was the most difficult thing to experience?

At the program: Having worked at a daycare in the United States, seeing how my project worked was shocking and a difficult learning curve for me. Compared to the structured plan and consequences of a daycare in the US, working in Ecuador was quite the opposite. This was partially due to my time of having come during summer vacation, but the kids are essentially allowed to participate in any activity for the day. Occassionally we had organized trips, but it was difficult to learn what they kids were allowed to and not to do and enforce those rules accordingly since their time was so free.

At the accomodation: I lived with a big family in my accomodation of friends and family members. Due to this there was a constant influx and movement of who was in the apartment when. This made it more difficult to know the exact time when we were having organized meals, who was home when, etc. This was especially harder during the first week, naturally, but I eventually learned the routine of my family.

The country: The thing I originally struggled most with was learning the slow pace of life here. I struggled to be comfortable with not having a plan for every day and every hour. I had to learn that almost nothing goes to plan here and you have to be ready for everything. Not only this, but I learned it’s okay to take a nap some days after a long day of Spanish lessons and my project. Rather than feeling like I have to take advantage of every second of every day, I adjusted to the slow and calm lifestyle of living here.

4 Any tips for future volunteers (clothing, travel, personal items, donations)

Take the weekends to travel as much as you can to see the landscapes! It’s truly amazing to see the changes and take the opportunity while it is there! Also if traveling to ecuador pack for chilly weather but if planning to go to the coast very hot weather as well, essentially be prepared for everything. And learn to go with the flow and lessen control over your plans and time here! It’s more fun to enjoy the trip as it comes than feel you have to do everything a certain way or check every item off your list.

4 Other things volunteers should know

A. Bring a rain jacket. Rain will come for 20 minutes then be sunny the next 30, but be prepared to changing weather and rain.

B. Take initiative and don’t wait for people to tell you what to do. Ask questions for yourself, don’t wait for others to ask for you.

C. Be cautious about the water and ice. Always ask if it’s purified or get a bottled water to be safe so you don’t get sick.

5 Personal Paragraph (ABV program testimonial)

Volunteering with ABV has truly been a life changing experience. I always felt safe as well with a security guard at the front door of the apartment complex and my own keys to lock the doors as I wished.

7 What was your favorite memory on this trip?

Program: I think my favorite memory is about one and a half to two weeks in when I really bonded with some of the kids at my host family. I brought a new card game to give and teach them, and once they were given it we played for several nights after dinner, all together playing all kinds of card games, talking, and laughing. It was the start of a true friendship which spawned into weekend trips with them and other fun evening activities!

Country: I spent a second weekend in Banos with another volunteer and two members of my host family which was absolutely amazing. We got to participate in bungee jumping, a massive swing, and see some well-known sites. Spending time with my host family and friends and getting to grow closer to them was a truly incredible experience.

Tours: My last weekened a friend and I traveled to Puerto Lopez on the coast where we took two tours. There we got to see several whales super close, sea lions, swam with turtles, snorkeled, and kayaked in the ocean. Even though I got very sunburnt and stung by a jellyfish while snorkeling, the tours were super cool to see the wildlife and practice my Spanish as I translated for my friends on the second tour.

8 How was ABV USA support prior to traveling?

A Broader View was great with keeping in contact with me, always responding, and answering all my questions. I always felt I had a connection to ask all my questions to who I knew would respond quickly and thoroughly. I appreciated having all my information in one place as well and easily accessible.

9 Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Yes, absolutely.

10 How did you find ABV?

The first ten days of my trip to Ecuador was organized by my alma mater high school. I had mentioned to my Spanish teacher that I was interested in extending my time in Ecuador past our departure date as a group. From there she forwarded me ABV’s link for the opportunity to volunteer abroad and live with a host family, which was my ideal hope since I wanted to practice and improve my Spanish.

Sincerely,

Sydnee Lynch

Explore a firsthand account of volunteering abroad through Jared’s insightful review. Immerse yourself in his transformative journey to Quito, Ecuador, where he participated in a pre-dental program, contributing to local healthcare while developing invaluable skills. Discover the impact of cross-cultural experiences on personal and professional growth.

Volunteer Review

1- How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?
It was absolutely amazing and can not be any more perfect. I got along so well with Laura and her beautiful family. We were able to have so much fun on the weekends getting to know Ecuador even better. Laura made sure to warn me of any dangers and of the places I should stay away from. Every meal provided to me was delicious and gave me a little taste of the culture here in Ecuador.

2- What was the most surprising thing you experienced?
There were not too many suprising things that I experienced volunteering in Ecuador due to the time that i have already spent here in south american. However, i was very suprised in the manner that the transportation is managed here. I could not believe how many people they are able to fit in the buses.

3- What was most difficult to experience?
The most difficult experience I had while here was understanding the bus routes here in able to navigate the city.

4- Any tips for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations)
So far, I do not have any plans for future volunteering, yet I do plan to come back here after I complete dental school to work at the clinic. ABV: after this trip Jared is volunteering with us in Costa Rica

5.1-Other things volunteers should know:
a. even though Quito is on the Equator it is still cold.
b. make time to go to Quilotoa and Cotopaxi.
c. bring some treats from your home country, the Ecuadorians love them.

6- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):

I was so excited coming to Quito and had huge expectations and was not disappointed. The mountains here are so beautiful and made me so happy. I loved the clinic I worked and was able to learn so much and even improve my Spanish each day. I loved getting to know the culture here as well as try all the different foods here. I loved spending time with Laura and her amazing family, we were able to have so much fun together in such short time. I also was able to see so many different parts of this beautiful country which made me very happy. Couldn’t have been more happy with the time I spent here in Quito.

7- How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security (e: host family, on-site, shared)
as I stated earlier, I love the food that laura makes here, I have felt very safe.

8- What was your favorite memory of this trip?

My favorite memory here has been hiking Cotopaxi and then mountain biking down the volcano. Also, i loved all the time i spent working with the dentists at the clinic.

9- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling?

It was great! Very nice and made things uncomplicated.

10 – Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
Yes!

1.-How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country (airport pickup and drop off, orientation, introduction to work, availability, other)?

Laura and her driver were standing at the airport with a sign for me when I arrived Saturday night. Karen came on Monday and completed my orientation in Spanish and English so that I understood details. Laura was also my host family. She was available 24-7. Laura made sure I had Evelyn, another Volunteer Coordinator/helper who spoke a bit of English with me the first week of work to help explain the danger in the streets. She also helped me understand direction at the project and how to take a Trolley home safely. Laura and her husband gave me a ride to work the first two weeks, as Laura’s work is also in the Historic Center. I walked from her work to mine through the center after the first week, but she was always available via What’s App if I needed her. She made sure there was always someone communicating with me and her regarding safety when I was moving about to and from the projects.

Feedback ecuador quito

2- What was the most positive surprise you experienced?

At the program: The projects are very organized, clean, neat and extremely safe. They are security guarded. Direction is given. Hours are precise just like in a working environment in the United States. You are given hours and stick to them promptly.

At the accommodation: The volunteers have their own apartment. It is fully equipped and private. I had my own bedroom and did not feel as though I was in a crowded group. There was a permanent Volunteer paid worker living in the apartment. On my 3rd week, one other volunteer who was a male came. I never felt an invasion of privacy. The apartment was full-sized, Westernized and private.

About the country: The country is absolutely beautiful. The people are friendly. There were a million things to do on your free time, and I never bored of the beauty, mountains, volcanos.

3- What was most difficult/culturalshock to experience?

At the accommodation: The host family does not speak English. The grown kids do, but they are not allowed to speak English to the volunteers. Again…I LOVED THIS, AS IMMERSION WAS PART OF MY GOAL.

The country: We went out one night on a street called Ronda to salsa dance and have dinner. It was fun, and there were 5 of us.

4- Any tips for future volunteers, give as many details as possible…

Clothing: Don’t over pack. You don’t need nice shoes or pants/skirts – you can’t go out at night. Travel pants that can become shorts are great – Bring two pair, and then you have 4 pair of pants. You do need a rain jacket. A heavy coat is only necessary on the mountains or hiking the volcano.

Donations: Bring a little something for the host family. Find out what they like if you can because I found out too late that my host family loves Skippy Peanut Butter, and can’t get the “good stuff” in Ecuador. I would have brought them that. Your home state T-shirts or novelty items are fine.

For your project, don’t overpack donations because it’s hard to know what they will need. I happened to do good with resistance bands for exercise (I’m a trainer and taught exercise while there) and English teaching supplies. I suggest taking extra cash and buying them things to leave if you want to donate.

Weather: It may rain but isn’t real cold or real warm (May)….take one long sleeve shirt (or two) for layers and your rain coat, gloves, a sun hat and a winter cap. (Layers you will need for excursions). I only wore shorts in the Galapagos.

4.1- Other things volunteers should know, about what to bring, what to do in country, what to eat, transportation, other:

a.- Use Uber while you are there – it’s the safest.
b.- You are safe in your host family house as are your valuables. You don’t need a lock, but you may need one like I did on your project to lock your things. (ABV: all volunteers must bring a lock for the valuables and store in luggage)
c.- Try local foods like bolon, encebollada (soup), tostados (snacks/soup garnish), chifles (banana chips)
d.- Go on all of the local excursions and do at least one or two day trips. Local things to do: Penecillo, Teleferico, Historic Center Museos and cathedrals, Basilica, Miltad Del Mundo. Day trips: Hot Springs Public pool park, Mindo, Baños, Otavalo, Cotopaxi Volcano, Galapagos Islands (weekend trip – w/airfare about $500 – more if you book excursions there).

5- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):

My project was very organized and perfect for me. I taught exercise, dance, English, and helped in therapy, kitchen, painting or wherever needed. I was able to take a knitting class with the seniors and had plenty of free time every afternoon and on the weekends for exploring – I got up at 5 a.m. everyday to workout and leave for work. I worked until 1 p.m. and then had the entire afternoon for exploring. You have to be home by 5 p.m. Dinner is at 7:00 p.m. promptly. I was usually in bed by 9:00 p.m., and then at it again. I was gone every weekend exploring, but if you stay home, breakfast is at 8:30 on weekends and you get to sleep in. If you eat breakfast (I don’t) It’s at 6:30 a.m. – lunch is between 1:30 and 3:00 or you can pack your lunch and take it to work. I came home for lunch often, but a few times I ate in the Historic Center – I love trying all of the banana dishes – they eat a lot of rice, potatoes and bananas.

This was an experience of a lifetime. It took me a week to get used to the streets. My back hurt, my body hurt, I was mentally and emotionally exhausted because my projects were in the Historic Center. I found that Uber is really the only SAFE TRANSPORTATION for a female traveling alone. I missed going out at night, but really enjoyed our group trip to Ronda for dancing. This was the perfect place for me to immerse in Spanish and grow my Spanish language vocabulary because nobody speaks English. Once I got use to Quito, I had THE TIME OF MY LIFE.

The fruit juices including Mora (blackberry juice) are absolutely delicious! I went to Mitad Del Mundo and the Historic Center with Laura my first 3 days there. I went to Otavalo and Cotopoxi my 2nd weekend, the Galapagos my third weekend, and the hot springs and shopping with Laura the last weekend there. I got my nails done for $2.50, which I could not believe.

My projects were perfect for me. My skill set was used 100%. My Spanish is now Intermediate. I learned a lot of expressions, and can now understand conversations. Ecuador is a beautiful country. Use caution when you are exploring the city. UBER is super cheap (under $4.00 anywhere in the city.

6- How would you describe your accommodation, meals and security in detail:6- How would you describe your accommodation, meals and security in detail:

The accommodations are perfect. Volunteers live in a private apartment. Meals are served promptly at 6:30 a.m., between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. and at 7:00 p.m. You go down to the 3rd floor apartment where your host family lives and eat as a family. They have an amazing dog who is a Golden Retriever. Food is delicious. Usually a Banana dish, eggs, fruit, fruit juice and coffee. Lunch is a meat, rice, fruit and salad. Dinner is usually left overs or soup. Usually something different and special on Friday nights. The apartment building is super secure – locked with a guard. Keys are used on entry and for the elevator. There is a great little coffee lunch restaurant downstairs that’s open until about 7 I believe.

7- What was your favorite memory of this trip?

My favorite project memories were: One of the seniors gave me her ring. She told me that God blessed them through me and she knew He was protecting me. She told me never to take the ring off. I did not take it off the entire time. She gave it to me on my 2nd day on the project. At the “homeless/immigrant house/shelter” my favorite memory was when the immigrant from Uganda made a purse for me and I was able to give her the cash she needed for her COVID test and watch her leave finally for her home in Uganda!

My favorite excursions were probably hiking the active volcano at Cotopaxi, swinging over the side of the mountain on the teleferico, and my long weekend trip to the Galapagos. The water falls at Baños and Mindo were spectacular, as were the hikes to get there. The hike up the volcano was intense and at a 15,000 foot plus Altitude, but 100% Valio’ La Pena! (It was worth it!) I also am so glad I booked Carlos, Laura’s Spanish Speaking Driver, for my excursions to Mindo and Baño. He was so fun and informational. He helped me buy a poncho from an indigenous lady in a local town – $15!

I went as an advanced beginner Spanish Speaker and came back as an intermediate. I did take two weeks of Spanish, but I feel like I learned more listening and trying to understand everything I was hearing at home and on the job than I did at my Spanish class.

8.- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling, who helped you?

Sarah at ABV was super helpful answering any questions I had. The website information was detailed and super helpful, and any challenges that arose during travel booking, fundraising, etc., Sarah always answered my questions and got back with me. Oliver even helped me read a Spanish contract when I had to change my flight from Peru to Quito Ecuador. I had problems with the refund, and Oliver helped me understand the contract. I raised 100% of my funds thanks to the ABV fundraising portal and direction provided on the orientation guideline.

9 – Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Yes – absolutely. I recommend ABV. They make it affordable, safe and easy to plan and carry out a Volunteer trip.

10 – Can you be specific how did you find or know about A Broader View?

A friend sent me the website link because she thought it was something that would interest me. Spanish Immersion is what she was looking for when she found it.

Discover the impactful volunteer experience of Raj & Susan in Costa Rica’s Escazu Dental Program. Read their inspiring review as they share their rewarding journey providing dental care to underserved communities. Join them in making a difference today

1.-How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country (airport pickup and drop off, orientation, introduction to work, availability, other)?

Great! They were very attentive to all our needs. Picked us up from the airport. Took us places for nearby sightseeing. Jenny accompanied us when we needed an interpreter for Spanish. She probably learned a lot of dentistry from us, while helping us.

Love her dogs!

2- What was the most positive surprise you experienced?

At the program: Got a great big hug from the child and Mom after I treated her child’s teeth. (Lot’s of tears for all of us!).She was in a lot of pain so was thrilled to feel better!

At the accommodation: Felt like we were at home

About the country: Has everything..Big malls but expensive!

3- What was most difficult/cultural shock to experience?

At the program: Not knowing Spanish was the hardest part!

At the accommodation: Very comfortable home that we were in.

Waking up to the roosters early AM!

The country: Great country, relatively poor country but seemed like there were very nice people.

4- Any tips for future volunteers, give as many details as possible…

Clothing: T shirts, shorts, comfortable clothing, scrubs…a lot depends on where one is going to be.

Donations: $, toothbrushes, gloves, toothpaste, other dental supplies, flash light, any other toilet articles, toys for kids.

Weather: Occasionally rains, but when we were there it was pretty hot.

4.1-Other things volunteers should know, about what to bring, what to do in country, what to eat, transportation, other:

a.- Toilet articles, flip flops, comfortable walking shoes

b.- Snacks to munch on, but one can buy almost anything. We enjoyed some Costa Rican food from local restaurants.

c.- Uber works there too. But taxi’s are abundant. Credit cards mostly accepted everywhere.

d.- Swim suits

5- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial), don’t leave blank:

Great experience! We went to a dental clinic, a homeless shelter, a special needs home and an area where we saw a ton of kids that needed dental exams. (Also in a relatively low socioeconomic area) Also did dental checkups at a school.

6- How would you describe your accommodation, meals and security in detail:

The coordinator was super attentive to all our needs. She took great care of us. Prepared food almost daily. She paid a lot of attention to detail and let us do whatever we wanted in her kitchen as we pleased. That made us very comfortable. Her house had many rooms to accommodate all of us.

We felt secure almost anywhere we went.

7- What was your favorite memory of this trip?

Program: Just having the variety of experiences, and able to help wherever we could. The experience provided how some people live in such poverty but appear content! But have minimal access to dental care.

Country: Beautiful mountains, scenery. The drive is pretty curvy if you are visiting the volcano 3 hrs away…Bring Dramamine if you get sick in long drives!

Tours: Mauricio Travel agent took us around for a tour to the Volcano and Baldi Spa…(One day- Time pass)

8.- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling?

Communication (Phone/emails/Online chat): Good. Mostly via Emails.

Website Information: We communicated mostly via Emails.

9 – Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Absolutely! Happy to! Wish we were able to speak with someone before we left.

10 – Can you be specific how did you find or know about A Broader View?

Went through the Volunteer program through the ADA website

1.-How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country (airport pickup and drop off, orientation, introduction to work, availability, other)?

My local ABV Coordinator, was extremely helpful. I was able to communicate with her easily as she was always accessible and she was able to guide me throughout my time in Costa Rica.

2- What was the most positive surprise you experienced?

At the program: I got to interact with many seniors and develop relationships with them.

At the accommodation: I felt like I was at home. Jenny took careo f me very nicely and the food was amazing. I was able to interact with other volunteers who stayed in the same accommodation as me.

About the country: I became more aware of their culture and the people’s day-to-day lives. I was able to tour many places during the weekends such as visiting a volcano, swimming in hot springs, going on a boat tour, and etc.

3- What was most difficult/cultural-shock to experience?

At the program: The main difficulty was language. I had some prior knowledge of speaking Spanish, however it wasn’t enough for me to socially interact with the people I met at the senior living center.

At the accommodation: The main difficulty was language. Although my coordinator spoke English and there were a few people from the United States, there were people who came from Spain with whom I had quite a difficult time communicating with. But, throughout my stay here, I was able to speak/comprehend Spanish better.

The country: Main difficulty was language. If I had to catch the bus or go in a taxi, communicating with the drivers was quite difficult. I was impressed how the people in Costa Rica have stayed in touch with their mother tongue.

4- Any tips for future volunteers, give as many details as possible…

Clothing: Pants (jeans or khakis), 2 long sleeve shirts, couple pair of scrubs, shoes, socks, slippers, swim suit, raincoat, t-shirts, and some night wear.

Donations: (I did not do any donations, so I don’t have any tips regarding this)

Weather: During my stay here, the weather was extremely unpredictable. It was cold, hot , sunny, and rainy while I was here.

4.1-Other things volunteers should know, about what to bring, what to do in country, what to eat, transportation, other:

a.- During your stay in Costa Rica, make sure you visit all the important tourist sites, as you will become more aware of the country.

b.- Taxis and busses are the best transportation. However, Uber is always available (based on your location), but quite expensive.

c.- You have to try traditional food at least once during your stay in Costa Rica.

5- Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial), don’t leave blank:

ABV was able to help me through ought my registration process. If I had any question they were quick to respond back. Even during my stay at Costa Rica, I was able to contact ABV quite easily. Overall my stay in Costa Rica was extremely nice. The coordinator was able to help me when I had problems and took care of me properly. ABV did a good job of finding a nice host family to stay with and provide me with all the information before I went to Costa Rica.

6- How would you describe your accommodation, meals and security in detail:

My accommodation was very nice. I felt like I was at home. I was able to freely Access anything I want such as the T.V., food, and etc. The meals were very well prepared. I liked every food I ate, and it was different each day/meal. I felt very safe during my stay there. Seurity was least of my worries as there was never a moment where I was scared or felt unsafe.

7- What was your favorite memory of this trip?

Program: I got to develop relationships with the senior people and the staff at my volunteer place.

Country: I really loved the food and the people there. Despite the language barrier, everyone I encountered were nice and friendly.

Tours: I liked swimming in the hot springs. It was a new and different experience for me and swimming in waters over 110F was very fun.

8.- How was the ABV USA support prior traveling?

Communication (Phone/emails/Online chat):

ABV was very quick to respond to any question (pone or email). I was able to ask anything I wanted and clear any doubts I had.

Website Information:

ABV website had all of the information I needed to decide that I wanted to choose this specific Project. It was very straightforward and easily understandable.

9 – Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Yes. I Will definitely recommend my friends to join this program for volunteering abroad.

10 – Can you be specific how did you find or know about A Broader View? What keywords did you use, what did you search for.

I found ABV through a series of search. I was mostly on Google searching for volunteering outside of the United States and I came across this wonderful program.

Embarking on a journey to Ecuador, specifically to the vibrant city of Quito, has been an unforgettable experience for me. As a 22-year-old female volunteer with aspirations of becoming a nurse, I decided to join the renowned organization A Broader View Volunteers to contribute my skills and immerse myself in a new culture. Throughout my time in Ecuador, I encountered numerous memorable moments, from the warm welcome of the local volunteers to the breathtaking adventures in the heart of this enchanting country.

Before setting off on my adventure, I meticulously researched different organizations that offered volunteer programs in Ecuador. Among the plethora of options, Abroaderview stood out as a reliable and reputable US Nonprofit organization dedicated to making a positive impact on local communities. The communication with their staff in the United States was seamless and reassuring. They provided me with a comprehensive volunteer guide, which proved to be an invaluable resource throughout my journey.

Upon my arrival in Quito, I was immediately struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The local volunteers, as well as the staff at Abroaderview.org, went above and beyond to ensure that I felt comfortable and supported. Their genuine hospitality and eagerness to foster a sense of community created an environment that quickly felt like home. The volunteer house, where I stayed with fellow volunteers, was a cozy and inviting space that facilitated lasting friendships and shared experiences.

One aspect of my time in Ecuador that stands out vividly in my memory is the incredible meals provided by the host family. Every day, we were treated to delicious and nutritious local cuisine, prepared with care by the host family. Sharing meals with fellow volunteers and engaging in lively conversations became a cherished daily ritual. The house truly felt like a family, with everyone coming together to create a supportive and nurturing environment.

As a pre-nursing student, I had the opportunity to work at a local hospital as part of my volunteer program. The commute to the hospital was a short and scenic journey, allowing me to experience the city’s vibrant atmosphere firsthand. It was truly fascinating to observe the bustling streets of Quito and interact with the friendly locals on a daily basis. This daily routine not only enriched my understanding of Ecuadorian culture but also instilled in me a deep sense of purpose and gratitude for the work I was doing.

At the hospital, the local staff proved to be invaluable mentors and guides. They willingly shared their knowledge and expertise, allowing me to gain firsthand experience in a clinical setting. Despite their busy schedules, they went out of their way to engage with us volunteers, answering questions and providing valuable insights. Additionally, some of the staff members extended their support beyond working hours, spending time with us and fostering a sense of camaraderie that transcended cultural barriers.

While my weekdays were filled with rewarding volunteer work, the weekends were reserved for thrilling adventures. Abroaderview organized tours to various destinations, allowing us to explore Ecuador’s natural and cultural wonders. From visiting “El Ombligo del Mundo” (the Middle of the World) to immersing ourselves in the captivating rainforests and quaint coastal villages, every excursion was a testament to Ecuador’s incredible diversity. Exploring Quito’s historic downtown, with its charming cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, was like stepping back in time. These weekend escapades not only added an exciting dimension to my experience but also deepened my appreciation for the rich heritage and natural beauty of Ecuador.

Throughout my entire journey, communication with the staff of Abroaderview in the United States was flawless. They were readily available to address any concerns or queries I had, ensuring that I felt supported and cared for. Whether it was coordinating logistics or providing guidance on cultural nuances, their responsiveness and professionalism were commendable. Additionally, the volunteer guide provided by ABV proved to be an invaluable resource. It was comprehensive, informative, and equipped me with the knowledge I needed to navigate both the volunteer program and the country.

Prior to my journey, I made an effort to learn basic Spanish phrases to facilitate communication with the locals. This proved to be immensely beneficial, as it allowed me to engage more meaningfully with the people I encountered. The Ecuadorian culture is rich and diverse, and the locals were incredibly welcoming and open to sharing their traditions and way of life. From participating in traditional dances to sampling local delicacies, every interaction was an opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant tapestry of Ecuadorian culture.

Reflecting on my experience with Abroaderview, I wholeheartedly recommend this organization to anyone seeking a life-changing volunteer journey. From the initial preparation to the on-ground support, every aspect was executed with professionalism, care, and a genuine commitment to making a positive impact. The warm and welcoming atmosphere fostered a sense of belonging, and the volunteer house felt like a true home away from home. The opportunity to work alongside dedicated local staff at the hospital allowed me to gain invaluable hands-on experience in my field of interest.

Moreover, the weekend adventures provided a unique opportunity to explore Ecuador’s breathtaking landscapes, historic sites, and cultural treasures. The commitment of Abv to providing well-organized and enriching excursions truly enhanced the overall experience. The seamless communication with the staff in the United States and the comprehensive volunteer guide ensured that I felt supported and prepared every step of the way.
